Direct Bookings

Direct bookings are the number one goal for nearly every hotel. Lower commissions, a better relationship with the guest, and more control over the experience from the very first moment. But wanting more direct bookings and having a strategy to make them happen are two entirely different things.

Hotel direct bookings don't just “happen” because you have a website. They are the result of a coordinated strategy where three things work together: pricing policy, website experience, and a clear reason for the guest to book directly. And as we explored in our article on why high occupancy doesn't always mean high profit, the quality of revenue matters more than the volume.

Hotel pricing strategy: the foundation of everything

If the price on your website is the same as on Booking.com, the guest has no reason to book from you. The OTA already offers trust, an easy process, and loyalty points. Reducing OTA dependency starts here: you need to give the visitor a reason to choose you instead.

This doesn't necessarily mean a lower price. It can mean added value: a free upgrade, early check-in, a welcome amenity, a flexible cancellation policy. The point is that there must be an incentive — something the guest can't find anywhere else.

Hotel website: experience matters

A hotel can have the best pricing strategy and still lose bookings because its website doesn't work. And when we say “doesn't work,” we don't mean it's ugly. We mean it doesn't guide the visitor toward a booking.

Consider the visitor's journey: they find the hotel on an OTA, like it, and go to the website to see if there's a better deal. If the website is slow, confusing, or the booking engine doesn't clearly show availability and price, the visitor goes back to the OTA. You didn't lose the booking at the start — you lost it at the very last step.

The website needs to do three things right:

  • Load fast, especially on mobile — over 70% of visitors search from their phone.
  • Show availability and prices clearly, with a simple and fast booking engine.
  • Give the visitor a reason to book here and not elsewhere — exclusive offers, perks, best price guarantee.

The “why”: the reason to book directly

OTAs have a huge advantage: trust. The visitor has booked dozens of times through the major OTAs, knows how they work, and trusts the process. To convince them to book directly from you, you need to offer something they can't find elsewhere.

Imagine two hotels. The first has a website with the same prices as the OTAs and no additional incentive. The second offers best price guarantee, free breakfast for direct bookings, and flexible cancellation through its website. Which one will have a higher direct booking ratio? The answer is obvious.

When the three don't work together

The most common mistake is working on one of the three in isolation. You have a good website but your pricing doesn't support direct. You have good prices but the website doesn't highlight them. You have exclusive offers but nobody sees them because there's no digital marketing strategy driving visitors to the site. This is exactly what metrics like RevPAR help reveal — they combine occupancy and rate to show whether your strategy is actually delivering.

The logic is simple: pricing, website, and reason to choose must work as one. When even one is missing, the bookings go elsewhere.

Conclusion

Direct bookings don't grow on their own. It's not about luck — it's about strategy. The right pricing, a website that drives bookings, and a clear reason for the visitor to choose you. When these three work together, the direct bookings follow. Want to see how this applies to your hotel?
